Juniors

At Edlesborough we have implemented a progressive and inclusive tennis programme that offers tennis to everyone regardless of standard and/or ambition.

Our Junior Programme follows a four stage progression (known as Mini Tennis) that allows and encourages children to play the game of tennis with equipment, and on a court, where they can gain maximum improvement and enjoyment from the sport.

As a child improves they will move up the stages of Mini Tennis until they are playing on a full size court with full size equipment.

A note for parents

A parent’s role in their child’s development is crucial. Parental support, whatever the outcome of their child’s endeavours, is invaluable and will ensure that the child enjoys tennis and continues to play this great sport for the rest of their life.

Every child develops at their own rate. Encourage and nurture this development and your child can be the best they can be.

Basic Skills for Tennis

Many children taking up tennis will need work on some basic skills to enable them to pick up the tennis specific skills. This work is beneficial for all children regardless of their tennis skill level.

This work is beneficial at all ages but is most effective up to an age of approximately 12 (a player’s biological age could vary by as much as +/- 2 years from their chronological age).

To achieve these basic skill, the following areas of work will be addressed:

  • Athleticism: Speed, Agility, Flexibility
  • Balance: Both static and dynamic balance
  • The ability to stop, start and change the direction of movement
  • Co-ordination: The ability to co-ordinate the body and body parts to carry out specific skills, with and without racket and ball

EDLESBOROUGH Mini Tennis programme

The four stage EDLESBOROUGH mini tennis progression detailed below allows and encourages children to play the game of tennis with equipment, and on a court, where they can gain maximum improvement and enjoyment from the sport. As a child improves they will move up the stages until they are playing on a full size court with full size equipment.

Mini Tennis Red
Great introduction to the game for children as young as four. Played on a small court (badminton size) with foam balls and small rackets. Fun to play and excellent for developing all aspects of the game.
LTA - Mini Tennis Red

Mini Tennis Orange
For children who require the next challenge after mini tennis red. Played on 3/4 of a normal court with low compression (transition) balls and medium rackets (19” to 23”). Allows developing players more room to play in, to further improve their game.
LTA - Mini Tennis Orange

Mini Tennis Green
For children moving on from mini tennis orange. Played on a full size court with medium compression balls and medium to large rackets. Children can now play on a full size court with balls suited to their size and strength.

Tennis
Full size court, tennis balls, rackets. Just like the pros.

Children over 10

At 10 years and older, Edlesborough have Under 14,16 and 18 coaching groups throughout the year as well as individual coaching if required. Juniors can also participate in Club and league tournaments, definitely one of the best ways for a player to improve his skill level.
